Curious About Fresh Dog Food From The Farmer’s Dog?

With the start of the new year, I’ve been taking a look at our grocery shopping and meal preparation–and checking out meal kits like Blue Apron and Plated for our meals. They’ve become increasingly popular as a way for people to enjoy homemade food without all the work, although the meal preparation is still done at home.

Recently we learned about a dog food delivery service that takes your dog’s dining a step further, sending freshly made pet food in a variety of recipes, ready to serve. The Farmer’s Dog features real food with USDA human-grade ingredients, made fresh and delivered within days of cooking.

Developed when the founder’s dog had an intolerance of commercial foods, The Farmer’s Dog takes the work out of homemade pet food by creating meals based on your dog’s specific needs and tastes. We recently had the chance to give the service a try with Irie and Tiki. Get your own trial at 50% off at this link:

Step one involved going online to create a personalized profile for each dog. You’ll complete an easy form about your dog’s age, weight, activity level, breed(s), and eating style.

After coming up with your dog’s personalized plan, you’ll then have the choice of multiple recipes, so you can select your dog’s favorites:

Irie and Tiki both like variety so I selected each of the recipes. Because Tiki is trying to lose some weight, her calorie count was a little less (as was the weekly cost). I loved the long list of healthy whole foods in the Turkey, Beef, and Pork formulas, from parsnips and chickpeas to kale and sunflower seeds.

Once your dog’s order is placed, The Farmer’s Dog gets to work. Using vet-formulated recipes prepared in the company’s New York kitchen, a 10-day supply of food is quickly frozen for transport using dry ice and insulated packaging:

I loved this eco-friendly touch with the insulation:

Although the dry ice had evaporated in transit, the shipment arrived frozen, with each package containing a one-day supply of food. Each package is marked for Irie or Tiki:

The packages are flat (which makes them easy to store in the freezer), but you’ll want to place three days in the refrigerator for defrosting. (Tiki was ready to just go ahead and eat the package, frozen or not!)

Each of the recipes proved to be a big hit with Irie and Tiki! I loved seeing the nuggets of real food in the mix, just like we’d see in a plate of homemade food for ourselves. The Farmer’s Dog was super convenient and easy to serve. We give The Farmer’s Dog a big paws up for anyone who would like to serve homemade, real meals to their dog while enjoying the convenience of a commercial diet!
