Choosing a Potty Pad . The idea behind using a potty pad is to provide a visible, consistent area for your puppy to go potty. You’ll want to choose something that is absorbent, easy to clean up, and large enough for the messes that your specific puppy makes. Large breed dogs may need heavy duty options compared to toy breeds.
If you train your dog to go on a pee pad in your kitchen for a couple of weeks, then move the peed pad to a different area, your dog will continue to go in the kitchen. Moving the pee pad around will do nothing but confuse your dog, and the training will take much longer to complete.
However, if it’s difficult to provide frequent potty breaks for your puppy due to your schedule, personal circumstances or living situation, pee pads or a dog porch potty can be a useful tool. Hello Pam, Many dogs that are trained to go potty outside, struggle to transition to pee pads later because pee pads are made of fabric and resemble rugs and carpet, which you dog knows to avoid. When this happens, sometimes it’s best not to force the issue because if your dog is confusing the two, then accidents on rugs and carpets might start when your dog begins to go on the pads finally.
I suggest doing this all at once instead of gradually while at the same time starting crate training for potty training – you can get pups used to being in a crate before crating for potty training, but once the pee pads are removed you need to move into crate training for potty training to stop accidents from happening in the house long enough for pups to learn a new habit of pottying outside.
