Interested in making your own dog harness with a leash? Follow these simple steps for a DIY harness that is both stylish and functional.
If you have a dog, you likely want to take them on walks or outings to the park. In order to do so safely and securely, you may want to invest in a dog harness with a leash. However, buying a harness can be expensive, and it may not fit your dog properly. Making your own harness is a cost-effective and customizable alternative. In this blog post, we will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to make a dog harness with a leash.
Materials Needed:
- Nylon webbing (1 inch wide)
- Two D-rings (1 inch wide)
- One swivel snap hook (1 inch wide)
- Measuring tape
- Scissors
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
Step 1:
Measuring Your Dog To ensure the harness fits your dog comfortably, you will need to measure their girth (the widest part of their ribcage). Use a measuring tape to get an accurate measurement, and add an inch to it for a comfortable fit.
Step 2:
Cutting the Nylon Webbing Cut two pieces of nylon webbing to the length of your dog’s girth measurement plus one inch. These two pieces will form the straps that go around your dog’s chest.
Cut another piece of nylon webbing to the length of your dog’s girth measurement plus six inches. This piece will be the strap that goes around your dog’s neck.
Step 3:
Attaching the D-Rings Take one of the chest straps and fold it in half. Slip one D-ring onto the folded end, then fold the webbing back over the D-ring. Sew the folded end down, securing the D-ring in place.
Repeat this process with the other chest strap and D-ring.
Step 4:
Attaching the Neck Strap Take the neck strap and fold it in half. Slip the two D-rings onto the folded end, then fold the webbing back over the D-rings. Sew the folded end down, securing the D-rings in place.
Step 5:
Assembling the Harness Lay one of the chest straps flat on a surface, with the D-ring facing up. Take the neck strap and loop it through the D-ring on the chest strap, then fold the neck strap in half and loop it through the other D-ring on the chest strap. Adjust the neck strap so that it sits comfortably around your dog’s neck.
Repeat this process with the other chest strap, making sure the straps are not twisted and that the D-rings are facing up.
Step 6:
Attaching the Leash Take the swivel snap hook and attach it to the two D-rings on the chest strap. Your harness is now complete and ready for use!
Making your own dog harness with a leash is an easy and cost-effective way to keep your dog safe and secure during walks or outings. By following these simple steps and using the materials listed above, you can create a harness that fits your dog perfectly and saves you money in the long run. Remember to always supervise your dog when using the harness and leash, and have fun exploring the great outdoors together!
