The Different Types of Emotional Support Pets (Besides Dogs!)
Everyone’s heard of emotional support dogs, but did you know other animals can provide the same purpose?
Support animals can provide services from acting as your eyes and ears, all the way to emotional support in times of distress.
However, if you’re not eligible for a support dog, don’t fear – there are other options. Each animal has merit for different conditions, and you must choose the right one for your needs.
If you’re interested in emotional support pets, read on to learn everything you need to know.
1. Cat
If you’re looking for an emotional support pet, a cat is one of the most popular choices. An emotional support cat can be independent while still providing you the love and support you crave.
Whether it’s for day-to-day support or just the occasional wobbly moment, a cat can be a great companion to help life be a little easier.
2. Rabbit
You may not have heard about an emotional support rabbit before, but owning one can be more rewarding than you first thought. They are easy to look after (this is particularly useful for people suffering from depression) and are easy to train.
Emotional support rabbits are most popular among those with anxiety and depression.
3. Horse
Whereas dogs have always taken precedent over other emotional support animals, miniature horses now have the same rights as other support animals. In 2019, the US transportation department even allowed miniature horses to board commercial flights if they are registered animals.
Horses have been proven to help with conditions such as depression, social anxiety, autism, and more.
4. Ferret
One of the best emotional support pet types for minor-moderate illness is the ferret. Ferrets are energetic and lovable and are becoming more and more popular as household pets regardless of whether they’re accredited support animals.
If you need encouragement to get out into the fresh air, a ferret is a great motivation – they need regular walks and will happily wear a harness. Under the ACAA law, they can even accompany you on airplane cabins if they’re a registered support animal.
5. Snake
Although not the most cuddly, snakes are quiet and calm – this is ideal for some people needing emotional support. Snakes are particularly popular for people with allergies to other household animals as they are hypoallergenic.
However, snakes can be dangerous, so it’s important to ensure that your pet is safe to be registered as an emotional support animal. If you’re unsure, you can check out the guidelines here: https://americanservicepets.com/sa/esa-certification-washington/.
