Food forbidden for cats and dogs at Christmas
The Christmas holidays are approaching and with them the celebrations around a table, full of exquisite foods. Our furry licks their licks and sometimes we are tempted to give them the odd delicacy, but be careful! What for us is a delight, for them it can be toxic. We tell you the details in this post.
Toxics coming home for Christmas
So that we have the holidays in peace, today we will talk about the typical foods of these lovely days that we should not give to our furry under any circumstances.
He thinks that, although they lick themselves with pleasure when smelling the succulent Christmas gastronomy, you have to stay firm and show your affection by giving them appropriate edibles for them.
Next, we will discuss the foods that our four-legged friends should not eat during these parties (or ever).
Banned foods for cats
With cats we must be very careful, as they are extremely sensitive animals to certain foods, even in minute quantities.
These are some of the banned products for your pussycat:
Sausages
They usually contain a large amount of fat, salt and other additives. Fats are not recommended for cats, since they can cause disorders, such as pancreatitis.
Nuts
No nuts, raw or toasted, so typical of these holidays. Its consumption can harm the digestive and renal systems of felines.
Grapes
Leave the grapes for the chimes and don’t even think about involving the cats in the celebration, this way you will free them from possible kidney failure.
Sweet
Not a bit of nougat or polvorones. The sweets must be kept away from the kittens to preserve their health.
Avocado
It turns out that this delicious and nutritious fruit for humans is counterproductive in the body of cats. The responsible is the persin toxin, present in all parts of the avocado and which can cause various disorders, such as gastrointestinal irritation, diarrhea, vomiting or respiratory distress.
Raw Fish
If you are preparing a good fish for Christmas Eve dinner, wait until it is cooked to give your cat a piece. Remember that raw can cause digestive problems due to the anisakis parasite.
Milk
After the lactation stage, cats are lactose intolerant. Keep in mind that in some Christmas meals we usually add milk in their preparation, such as when making the bechamel of the cannelloni and the croquettes. Therefore, for their stomach welfare, do not offer your kitten milk or preparations that contain it.
Onion and garlic
These ingredients are the kings of Mediterranean cuisine and highly valued for their cleansing and antiseptic qualities. This works for humans, but not for kittens, since its thiosulfate content (garlic has less toxicity than onion), a substance difficult for cats to process, can cause hemolytic anemia, diarrhea, vomiting and respiratory problems.
“We must not give our furry Christmas leftovers. In general, they contain too much fat and harmful substances. We can recycle them into new dishes, such as cannelloni or empanadas, or directly, discard them “
Forbidden dog food
Although they are somewhat less delicate than cats, with dogs we must not lower our guard against foods like the ones we will discuss below.
Shellfish
Be careful with shellfish shells, they contain chitin, a carbohydrate that is difficult for dogs to digest and that can cause various disorders, such as vomiting, diarrhea and constipation.
Chocolate
This food must be completely discarded from the dog’s diet, not only at these holidays but throughout the year. In addition to the sugars it contains, chocolate contains theobromine, a poisonous substance that, depending on the dose, can cause an upset stomach, muscle tremors, seizures, arrhythmias, internal bleeding, and even death.
Grapes
Although their price is through the roof, grapes are the stars of these parties and it is easy for your furry to access them. Keep them out of your dog’s sight to prevent vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, kidney failure, and even death.
Nuts and Macadamia Nuts
Who doesn’t put nuts on their table during the holidays? For humans they are an interesting source of minerals and vitamins, but for dogs they are toxic due to their high phosphorus content. They can upset your body, causing bladder stones. The ingestion of a handful of Macadamia nuts can cause vomiting, arthritis, muscle weakness, hypothermia, dizziness, tremors and fever.
Avocados
This fruit, so valued in gastronomy for its great nutritional value and exquisite texture, is toxic to our dogs, due to persin, a fungicidal substance that can cause gastrointestinal and respiratory disorders. For their sake, when preparing the shrimp cocktail or guacamole, try to keep them away from your furry’s snout.
Onion and garlic
These vegetables are not usually lacking in every kitchen worth its salt, but our dogs are not prepared to process thiosulfates or such intense flavors. To avoid major disorders, we must completely avoid them in their diet.
Citrus
Be very careful during the holidays with oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits, as well as other fruits with a high content of citric acid, since they harm the health of the dogs. If your furry catches some orange segments, it can experience, depending on the amount, from simple diarrhea or an upset stomach, to serious disorders of the central nervous system. On the other hand, the toxic components of lemon and lime trigger vomiting, diarrhea and photophobia.
Milk
Neither milk nor any of its derivatives, such as yogurt or cheese, since none of this is good for dogs and the reason is its high fat and lactose content. It is estimated that most dogs are lactose intolerant. Drinking milk by dogs can cause diarrhea, vomiting and other gastrointestinal disorders.

Gourmet-friendly delicacies
As our furry ones also have their little hearts, they will want to participate in the gastronomic traditions of these festivals.
To give them as they deserve, we can offer them some foods suitable for four-legged gourmets:
- Delicious cookies or special snacks for cats and dogs: you will find them in specialized stores, with the guarantee that they will be beneficial for them.
- When making the prawn cocktail, if the dog looks at us with sadness, a peeled prawn may fall on him, as long as our dog is not a Dalmatian, since this breed has a tendency to suffer from gout.
- If we have prepared a succulent baked turkey: you can taste a piece, previously washed, in the case that we have put onion or garlic.
- Your dog will be able to delight in fruits appropriate for dogs, such as pineapple or apples.
- A piece of lactose-free cheese, or ham, as natural as possible, without additives, cannot harm your dog and will make the celebrations happy.
